The Schooleys

In the city directories 1940 · eleven people at seven addresses

The directories print eleven people named Schooley at seven addresses in 1940 in three of the city's neighbourhoods, with the close spelling Scholey. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: five Schooleys at 1556 Graveley in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the eleven: an accountant, a driver, a hairdresser, an on active service, a proprietor and a salesman, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Grandview-Woodland (3), Downtown (2) and West End (2). Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Ann P Schooley at 1511 Barclay Street, a hairdresser at Spencer's. N H Schooley is listed at 1622 Charles Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Nelson H Schooley there as the householder.

F B Scholey is listed at 1154 Gilford Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Foster B Scholey there as the householder, an accountant for A E Jukes. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Schooley at 1046 Granville Street.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs L M Schooley at 1556 Graveley Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Lila M Schooley there as the householder, widow of W F, with Arnold F Schooley, a salesman at Pemberton Realty, E Theo Schooley, I Alex Schooley, a driver, and Jennie G Schooley, a school teacher. In 1940 the directory lists F T Schooley at 610 Jervis Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frederick T Schooley there as the householder, proprietor of The Felix.

In 1940 the directory lists F F Schooley at 1534 Victoria Drive; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists F Francis Schooley there as the householder, on active service.

Today

1511 Barclay, 1622 Charles, 1154 Gilford, 1046 Granville and 610 Jervis still have their buildings from before 1946, 1154 Gilford and 610 Jervis on the Vancouver Heritage Register; the City no longer lists 1556 Graveley and 1534 Victoria Drive, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
