What they did

The name section prints a trade for one of the 13: a driver. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Hastings-Sunrise (3), West End (3), Grandview-Woodland (2), Fairview, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Killarney, Renfrew-Collingwood and Riley Park. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs C E Salmon at 920 Bidwell Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Harry Salmon at 884 Bute Street. The 1940 name section lists Herman Salmon at 1643 East 13th Avenue, retired. F G Salmon, a transfer, is listed at 2869 East 14th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark).

In 1940 the directory lists J E Salmon at 2723 East 1st Avenue. H G Salmon is listed at 3340 East 44th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. In 1940 the directory lists R C L Salmon at 2336 East 5th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Roy C L Salmon there, a driver.

The 1940 name section lists Mary Salmon at 166 West 19th Avenue, widow of J. Mrs S Salmon is listed at 1521 West 8th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Sheila Salmon there as the householder.

Today

884 Bute, 1133 McLean Drive and 166 West 19th still have their buildings from before 1946, 884 Bute on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 2869 East 14th (1993), 2723 East 1st (1984), 2458 East 5th (1992) and 3455 East Pender (1965) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 920 Bidwell, 1643 East 13th, 3340 East 44th, 2336 East 5th, 1831 Pendrell and 1521 West 8th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under S. Want a name removed? Tell us.
