A family name in Vancouver's city directories
The Pottingers
In the city directories 1940 · ten people at eight addresses
The directories print ten people named Pottinger at eight addresses in 1940 in five of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Pottingers at 7887 Montcalm in 1940.

Their neighbourhoods

The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists E L Pottinger at 5708 Alma Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Edmund L Pottinger there as the householder, a dentist. In 1940 the directory lists J J Pottinger at 1119 East 19th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists John J Pottinger there as the householder, a salesman at Burns & Co, with John J Pottinger Jr, a shipper at Burns & Co.
In 1940 the directory lists A Pottinger at 7887 Montcalm Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Alex Pottinger there as the householder, a fisherman, with Evelyn Pottinger, a clerk at Retail Credit Grantors, and William Pottinger, a fisherman. In 1940 the directory lists G Pottinger at 8468 Shaughnessy Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists George Pottinger there as the householder, a longshoreman. In 1940 the directory lists W Pottinger, a building contractor, at 8492 Shaughnessy Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William Pottinger there as the householder, a building contractor.
The 1940 name section lists Walter Pottinger at 1075 West 10th Avenue, a technician at the Vancouver General Hospital. E L Pottinger, a physician, is listed at 925 West Georgia Street in 1940.
Today
5708 Alma and 8468 Shaughnessy still have their buildings from before 1946, 8468 Shaughnessy on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 1119 East 19th (1986), 7887 Montcalm (2009) and 1075 West 10th (1966) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 8420 Shaughnessy, 8492 Shaughnessy and 925 West Georgia, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under P. Want a name removed? Tell us.
