The Paytons
In the city directories 1940 · twelve people at seven addresses
The directories print twelve people named Payton at seven addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: five Paytons at 3027 East 29th in 1940.

What they did
The name section prints a trade for seven of the twelve: a salesman (2), a clerk, a fireman, a motorman, an operator and a station master. Some worked for the same employer: two for BC Electric Railway and two for Leckie. One is a widow, listed under her own name.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Riley Park (2), Fairview, Hastings-Sunrise, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Renfrew-Collingwood and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists G J Payton at 257 East 17th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Godfrey J Payton there as the householder, a motorman at the BC Electric Railway. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs B M Payton at 3027 East 29th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Beatrice M Payton there as the householder, widow of R, with Ernest F Payton, an operator at Leckie, Molly M Payton, Stan A Payton, a salesman at Leckie, and Thelma Payton.
In 1940 the directory lists W J Payton at 2251 East 30th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William J Payton there as the householder, a fireman at the City of Vancouver. In 1940 the directory lists W G Payton at 2805 East Pender Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William G Payton there as the householder, a station master at the CPR.
The 1940 name section lists George Payton at 1600 Robson Street. G M Payton is listed at 4136 Sophia Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists George M Payton there as the householder, a clerk at CP Express, with Irene G Payton. The 1940 name section lists Gordon Payton at 1765 West Broadway, a salesman at the BC Electric Railway.
Today
257 East 17th and 3027 East 29th still have their buildings from before 1946; 2251 East 30th (1980), 2805 East Pender (1981) and 4136 Sophia (1979) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1600 Robson and 1765 West Broadway, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under P. Want a name removed? Tell us.
