What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the eleven: a carpenter, a geophysical surveyor, a kennels, a longshoreman, a proprietor and a salesman, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in West End (3), Downtown (2), Strathcona (2), Arbutus Ridge, Dunbar-Southlands, Kensington-Cedar Cottage and Killarney. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Harold M Oates at 578 Alexander Street. R Oates is listed at 3356 East 44th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Rowland Oates there as the householder, a salesman.

C Oates is listed at 823 East Pender Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Charles Oates there as the householder, a longshoreman. The 1940 name section lists Arthur S Oates at 986 Howe Street.

In 1940 the directory lists C J Oates at 960 Jervis Street. The 1940 name section lists Creswell J Oates there as the householder, a school teacher. In 1940 the directory lists G L Oates at 1111 Jervis Street. The 1940 name section lists George L Oates there as the householder.

In 1940 the directory lists F Oates at 1075 Robson Street. The 1940 name section lists Fred Oates there as the householder, proprietor of Variety Store.

In 1940 the directory lists A J L Oates at 3535 West 29th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists A J Lawson Oates there as the householder, a secretary and accountant at Begg Motor. In 1940 the directory lists G L Oates, a geophysical surveyor, at 615 West Pender Street. The 1940 name section lists George L Oates there, a geophysical surveyor.

Today

3356 East 44th, 1111 Jervis and 3535 West 29th still have their buildings from before 1946, 1111 Jervis on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 1022 Kingsway (1989) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 578 Alexander, 823 East Pender, 986 Howe, 960 Jervis, 1075 Robson, 615 West Pender and 5455 Yew, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under O. Want a name removed? Tell us.
