The Noels

In the city directories 1940 · twelve people at eight addresses

The directories print twelve people named Noel at eight addresses in 1940 in eight of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: four Noels at 1408 West 57th in 1940.

Where the Noels lived

Each pin is on its own block, numbered as the households below. Two addresses aren't on today's map, so they have no pin. Today's land, parks, main roads and local areas: City of Vancouver Open Data (Open Government Licence – Vancouver).

What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the twelve: a bridgeman, a laborer, a nurse, an office, a pilot and a salesman, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Fairview, Hastings-Sunrise, Kerrisdale, Marpole, Oakridge, Riley Park, Sunset and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Arthur Noel at 111 East 27th Avenue, a laborer. The 1940 name section lists Phillippe Noel at 796 East 57th Avenue, a bridgeman. In 1940 the directory lists W Noel at 2761 Eton Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Walter Noel there as the householder, a ticket salesman at Second Narrows Bridge, with W Doug Noel, a warehouseman at Mackenzie White & Dunsmuir, and Gerald A Noel, a scorer at National Paper Box.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs D C Noel at 1414 Haro Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Delina C Noel there as the householder. In 1940 the directory lists A F Noel at 6400 Larch Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Arthur F Noel there as the householder, an office.

In 1940 the directory lists J Noel at 7662 Montcalm Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Jack Noel there as the householder, a salesman at Evans-Sheppard. In 1940 the directory lists L P O Noel at 1465 West 14th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists L P Omer Noel there as the householder, retired.

In 1940 the directory lists J E Noel at 1408 West 57th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists James E Noel there as the householder, a pilot at the Canadian Government, with Kathleen M Noel, a nurse, Margaret A Noel, and Norma E Noel, a saleswoman.

Today

111 East 27th, 796 East 57th, 2761 Eton, 6400 Larch and 1465 West 14th still have their buildings from before 1946; 1408 West 57th (2007) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1414 Haro and 7662 Montcalm, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under N. Want a name removed? Tell us.
