What they did
The name section prints a trade for six of the eight: a cook (2), a barber, an employee, a janitor and a messman. Two of them worked for Vancouver Hotel.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Fairview (2), Hastings-Sunrise (2), Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Kensington-Cedar Cottage and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists J Myles at 2528 Cambridge Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists James Myles there as the householder, a cook at the Vancouver Hotel. In 1940 the directory lists G A Myles at 2748 Graveley Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists George A Myles there as the householder, a barber.
The 1940 name section lists Gordon R Myles at 1120 Nelson Street, a messman for F Waterhouse. The 1940 name section lists Frank Mayles at 6 Water Street, retired. In 1940 the directory lists T Myles at 1373 West 11th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Thomas Myles there as the householder, a janitor at the Metro Building.
The 1940 name section lists Robert Myles at 3559 West 19th Avenue, who worked for the Sun. The 1940 name section lists John Myles at 1418 West 7th Avenue as the householder, who worked for McRoberts Ranges. The 1940 name section lists Thomas Myles at 5261 Windsor Street, a cook at the Vancouver Hotel.
Today
2528 Cambridge, 2748 Graveley, 3559 West 19th and 5261 Windsor still have their buildings from before 1946; the City no longer lists 1120 Nelson, 6 Water, 1373 West 11th and 1418 West 7th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
