What they did

The name section prints a trade for six of the eight: a chemist, a clerk, an engineer, a fireman, a police officer and a salesman.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in West End (2), Downtown, Fairview, Killarney, Riley Park and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Cath McManus at 1115 Barclay Street. W McManus is listed at 3220 East 47th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists William McManus there as the householder, a chemist, with Dianne McManus, a clerk. The 1940 name section lists Ross C McManus at 1161 Harwood Street, a police officer at the CPR.

The 1940 name section lists Philip McManus at 712 Richards Street. W F McManus is listed at 4634 West 14th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Walter F McManus there as the householder, a fireman at the University Area Fire Department.

H McManus is listed at 1550 West 15th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Herbert McManus there as the householder, a salesman at M-W Ltd. C L McManus is listed at 3224 Yukon Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Charles L McManus there as the householder, an engineer at the Grosvenor Hotel.

Today

4634 West 14th still has its building from before 1946, dated 1938 by the City's record; 3220 East 47th (2014), 1550 West 15th (1993) and 3224 Yukon (1999) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1115 Barclay and 1161 Harwood, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred); for 712 Richards, its page says what we could and couldn't match to today's buildings.

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
