The McKenneys

In the city directories 1940 · eleven people at nine addresses

The directories print eleven people named McKenney at nine addresses in 1940 in four of the city's neighbourhoods, with the close spelling MacKenney. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three McKenneys at 1155 West Georgia in 1940.

The name section prints a trade for eight of the eleven: a salesman (3), a laborer (2), an apprentice, an assistant branch manager and a longshoreman and rooms to let.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kensington-Cedar Cottage (3), Strathcona (3), Downtown (2) and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists F R McKenney at 3765 Beatrice Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Frederick R McKenney there as the householder, a salesman at Hunter-Henderson Paint. In 1940 the directory lists C W McKenney at 1792 East 37th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Clifton W McKenney there as the householder, a salesman for F Deeley.

The 1940 name section lists C McKenney at 431 East Georgia Street. The 1940 name section lists Hugh McKenney at 634 East Georgia Street. In 1940 the directory lists J D McKenney at 1253 Franklin Street. The 1940 name section lists John D McKenney there as the householder, a laborer.

In 1940 the directory lists V H McKenney at 4740 Henry Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Victor H McKenney there as the householder, a laborer at the City of Vancouver. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs A McKenney, in farm produce, at 822 Seymour Street.

G McKenney is listed at 4247 West 15th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists George McKenny there as the householder, an assistant branch manager at Safeway Stores. W A MacKenney is listed at 1155 West Georgia Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists William A MacKenney there, a longshoreman who kept rooms to let, with Arnold V MacKenney, a salesman, and Leslie MacKenney, an apprentice at Magnet Meat Market.

Today

634 East Georgia still has its building from before 1946, dated 1905 by the City's record and on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 3765 Beatrice (2006), 1792 East 37th (1976), 4740 Henry (2017), 822 Seymour (2005) and 4247 West 15th (2020) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 431 East Georgia, 1253 Franklin and 1155 West Georgia, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
