What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the eleven: an accountant, a helper, a labeller, a plasterer, a salesman and a superintendent, among others. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Riley Park (3), Dunbar-Southlands, Grandview-Woodland, Hastings-Sunrise, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Renfrew-Collingwood and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists S McIlwain at 3759 Dumfries Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Sam McIlwain there as the householder, a superintendents assistant at BC Motor Transportation. The 1940 name section lists Johnson McIlwain at 22 East 18th Avenue, a salesman at Sterling Furniture.

Mrs M G McIlwain is listed at 3249 East 23rd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Margaret G McIlwain there as the householder, widow of D, with Lillias C McIlwain, a labeller at Martin-Senour. A McIlwain is listed at 446 East 34th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Albert McIlwain there as the householder, a helper at Canadian Bakeries.

E A McIlwain is listed at 377 East 36th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Edward A McIlwain there as the householder, a troubleman. J I McIlwain is listed at 2276 Franklin Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists John I McIlwain there as the householder, a plasterer.

A E McIlwaine is listed at 3267 West 21st Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists A Edward McIlwaine there as the householder, an accountant at the Canadian Bank of Commerce.

Today

22 East 18th, 377 East 36th and 3142 Turner still have their buildings from before 1946; 3759 Dumfries (2019), 3249 East 23rd (1966), 446 East 34th (1979) and 3267 West 21st (2017) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2276 Franklin and 4340 West 9th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
