The Mahys

In the city directories 1940 · nine people at seven addresses

The directories print nine people named Mahy at seven addresses in 1940 in three of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Mahys at 76 North Kaslo in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the nine: a machinist operator (2), a packer, a plasterer, a polisher, a porter and a swamper. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Hastings-Sunrise (4), Grandview-Woodland (2) and Strathcona. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists F Mahy at 1337 East 8th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Frederick Mahy there as the householder, a fire captain at the City of Vancouver, with Frederick H Mahy, a machinist operator at American Can. In 1940 the directory lists V E Mahy at 1624 East Georgia Street. The 1940 name section lists Verdun E Mahy there as the householder, a polisher at Regal Lamp.

The 1940 name section lists Peter J Mahy at 2424 Franklin Street, retired. The 1940 name section lists Arthur F Mahy at 296 Keefer Street, a swamper. In 1940 the directory lists A Mahy at 2680 McGill Street. The 1940 name section lists Aldophus Mahy there as the householder, a plasterer.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs E Mahy at 76 North Kaslo Street. The 1940 name section lists Emma Mahy there as the householder, widow of E, with James E Mahy, a packer at Burns & Co, and Margaret M Mahy, a machinist operator at Simmons. In 1940 the directory lists P J Mahy at 255 North Kootenay Street. The 1940 name section lists Peter J Mahy there as the householder, a porter at Macdonald's Prescriptions.

Today

1624 East Georgia, 2680 McGill and 76 North Kaslo still have their buildings from before 1946; 255 North Kootenay (2015) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1337 East 8th, 2424 Franklin and 296 Keefer, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
