The Mahers

In the city directories 1940 · eleven people at seven addresses

The directories print eleven people named Maher at seven addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: four Mahers at 3265 East 23rd in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for six of the eleven: a candymaker, a mailing, an on active service, a police officer, a saleswoman and a traveller. Two are widows, listed under their own names.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Grandview-Woodland (2), Downtown, Renfrew-Collingwood, Riley Park, Shaughnessy and South Cambie. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs M Maher at 3265 East 23rd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Mabel Maher there as the householder, widow of J, with Annie M Maher, a saleswoman, Gerard Maher, and Mabel M Maher, a candymaker at Spencer's. In 1940 the directory lists C Maher at 1736 East 5th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Charles Maher there as the householder, on active service.

The 1940 name section lists James W Maher at 1726 East 6th Avenue. J J Maher is listed at 4487 Granville Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John J Maher there as the householder.

E G Maher is listed at 4539 John Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Edward G Maher there as the householder, a traveller at F & F Equipment. F Maher is listed at 737 West 23rd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frank Maher there as the householder, a police officer at the City of Vancouver, with Cath Maher, widow of J.

The 1940 name section lists Thomas Maher at 1115 West Pender Street, in mailing at the Sun.

Today

1736 East 5th, 1726 East 6th, 4487 Granville, 4539 John and 737 West 23rd still have their buildings from before 1946; 3265 East 23rd (1984) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1115 West Pender, so that building is probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under M. Want a name removed? Tell us.
