A family name in Vancouver's city directories
The Lytles
In the city directories 1940 · nine people at six addresses
The directories print nine people named Lytle at six addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods, with the close spelling Lyttle. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: four Lytles at 2211 East 44th in 1940.

What they did
The name section prints a trade for seven of the nine: a clerk (2), a morse operator, a musician, an on active service, a shipper and a stenographer. Two of them worked for CN Telegraphs.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Downtown, Kerrisdale, Renfrew-Collingwood, Victoria-Fraserview, West End and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists James Lytle at 1560 Comox Street, a musician. E C Lytle is listed at 2211 East 44th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Elmer C Lytle there as the householder, a morse operator at the CN Telegraphs, with Don E Lytle, George A Lytle, a student, and Harry S Lytle, a clerk at the CN Telegraphs. The 1940 name section lists Serena J Lytle at 560 Howe Street, a stenographer at Gypsum Lime & Alabastine.
The 1940 name section lists Herbert E Lytle at 3546 Wellington Avenue, a shipper at Vancouver Trunk & Bag. A Lyttle is listed at 4484 West 15th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Alex Lyttle there as the householder, on active service.
E H Lytle is listed at 2031 West 43rd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Edward H Lytle there as the householder, a clerk at the BC Electric Railway.
Today
3546 Wellington and 4484 West 15th still have their buildings from before 1946; 1560 Comox (2011), 2211 East 44th (1989) and 2031 West 43rd (1985) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 560 Howe, so that building is probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under L. Want a name removed? Tell us.
