What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the eleven: an accountant, an auto body builder, a checker, a clerk, a leverman and a messenger, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in West Point Grey (3), Dunbar-Southlands (2), West End (2), Renfrew-Collingwood and Shaughnessy. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists C Harold Lorimer at 1123 Comox Street, a checker at the CPR. J Lorimer is listed at 3004 East 28th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists John Lorimer there as the householder, an auto body builder.

Mrs M Lorimer is listed at 1768 Robson Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Margaret Lorimer there as the householder, widow of G. T W Lorimer is listed at 4258 West 11th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Thomas W Lorimer there as the householder, a messenger at the Imperial Bank, with Ian Lorimer.

J McI Lorimer is listed at 4605 West 13th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John McI Lorimer there as the householder, a president at System Parcel and a manager at Crown Cartage, with John McI Lorimer Jr. C S D Lorimer is listed at 4419 West 14th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Charles S D Lorimer there as the householder, an accountant.

G M Lorimer is listed at 1135 West 29th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists George M Lorimer there as the householder, retired, with Lloyd N Lorimer, a leverman at Canadian White Pine. G B Lorimer is listed at 3869 West 30th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists G Bruce Lorimer there as the householder, a secretary-treasurer for R G Heddle.

J R Lorimer is listed at 3916 West 35th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists J Ross Lorimer there as the householder, a clerk for Balfour Guthrie.

Today

4258 West 11th, 4605 West 13th and 3916 West 35th still have their buildings from before 1946; 4419 West 14th (2004) and 3869 West 30th (1988) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1123 Comox, 3004 East 28th, 1768 Robson and 1135 West 29th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under L. Want a name removed? Tell us.
