What they did

The name section prints a trade for five of the nine: a packer (2), a car repairer, a clerk and a florist. Two of them worked for Nabob Food Products.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kensington-Cedar Cottage (4), Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands and Riley Park. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists A S Lobban at 5114 Chester Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Alex S Lobban there as the householder. The 1940 name section lists James Lobban at 337 Dunsmuir Street, retired.

J J Lobban is listed at 563 East 22nd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John J Lobban there as the householder, a guard at the BC Electric Railway, with John J Lobban Jr, a car repairer at the BC Electric Railway, Elizabeth M Lobban, a packer at Nabob Food Products, and Margaret D Lobban, a packer at Nabob Food Products. J (greenhouse) Lobban is listed at 1444 East 27th Avenue in 1940.

In 1940 the directory lists J Lobban, a florist, at 1495 East 27th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists James Lobban there, a florist. In 1940 the directory lists J Lobban, a florist, at 1350 Kingsway; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Thomas C Lobban at 3884 West 22nd Avenue, a clerk at Canadian National Steamships.

Today

5114 Chester, 563 East 22nd and 1495 East 27th still have their buildings from before 1946, 563 East 22nd on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 1444 East 27th (1998) and 1350 Kingsway (2014) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 337 Dunsmuir and 3884 West 22nd, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under L. Want a name removed? Tell us.
