A family name in Vancouver's city directories
The Linns
In the city directories 1935–1940 · seven people at six addresses
The directories print seven people named Linn at six addresses between 1935 and 1940 in four of the city's neighbourhoods, with the close spelling Lin. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family.

What they did
The name section prints a trade for four of the seven: a clerk, an employee, a fisherman and a pipe fitter. Two of them worked for Vancouver General Hospital. One is a widow, listed under her own name.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Grandview-Woodland (2), Renfrew-Collingwood (2), Downtown and Strathcona. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1935 and 1940 the directory lists C Linn at 710 Keefer Street; the 1935 and 1940 lines are marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Charles Linn there as the householder, a fisherman. In 1940 the directory lists A C Linn at 3353 East 28th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Archibald C Linn there as the householder, a clerk at the Vancouver General Hospital, with Margaret H Linn, widow of J.
The 1940 name section lists James Linn at 1587 East 6th Avenue. G Y Linn is listed at 1932 East 7th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists George Y Linn there as the householder, who worked for the BC Telephone.
Kee Lin is listed at 66 East Hastings Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Kee (Jont) mgr Lin there as the householder. W Linn is listed at 3331 Slocan Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William Linn there as the householder, a pipe fitter at the Vancouver General Hospital.
Today
1932 East 7th still has its building from before 1946, dated 1928 by the City's record; 3353 East 28th (1971) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1587 East 6th, 66 East Hastings and 3331 Slocan, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred); for 710 Keefer, its page says what we could and couldn't match to today's buildings.

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under L. Want a name removed? Tell us.
