What they did

The name section prints a trade for ten of the 16: an employee, a loan manager, a machinist, a managing director, a physician and a president, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (3), Kerrisdale (3), Arbutus Ridge, West End and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists G S Lennie at 6162 Angus Drive. G S Lennie is listed at 6691 Churchill Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Gerald S Lennie there as the householder, a loan manager for Mutual Life.

R S Lennie, a barrister, is listed at 736 Granville Street in 1940. In 1940 the listing there is Miss E B C Lennie, a sculptor. T J Lennie is listed at 5786 Marguerite Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Thomas J Lennie there as the householder, a secretary at Lennie & Co, with David G Lennie, a president at Lennie & Co Ltd.

J J Lennie is listed at 1436 Thurlow Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John J Lennie there as the householder, a salesman, with Agnes J Lennie, who worked for the BC Telephone, and Edith I Lennie, a school teacher. Dr T H Lennie is listed at 4540 West 3rd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Theo H Lennie there as the householder, a physician, with Doris C Lennie, a student at UBC.

R S Lennie is listed at 2307 West 41st Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists E Beatrice S Lennie there, a sculptor, with R Doug Lennie, a managing director at Pacific Coast Mine Operators Ltd. The 1940 name section lists J Lennie at 177 West Cordova Street, a machinist at the Burrard Dry Dock. In 1940 the directory lists T H Lennie, a physician, at 925 West Georgia Street.

Today

736 Granville, 5786 Marguerite and 4540 West 3rd still have their buildings from before 1946; 6162 Angus Drive (2000) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 6691 Churchill, 1436 Thurlow, 2307 West 41st, 177 West Cordova and 925 West Georgia, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under L. Want a name removed? Tell us.
