A family name in Vancouver's city directories
The Leahys
In the city directories 1940 · eight people at five addresses
The directories print eight people named Leahy at five addresses in 1940 in five of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: four Leahys at 6920 Inverness in 1940.

What they did
The name section prints a trade for seven of the eight: an apprentice, a clerk, a druggist, an electrician, a fireman and a laborer, among others. Two of them worked for Cunningham Drug.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Downtown, Fairview, Grandview-Woodland, Riley Park and Sunset. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists P J Leahy at 135 East 16th Avenue. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Patrick J Leahy there as the householder, a fireman at the BC Coast Steamship Service. In 1940 the directory lists T Leahy at 1346 East Georgia Street. The 1940 name section lists Thomas Leahy there as the householder, a longshoreman.
The 1940 name section lists Daniel J Leahy at 160 East Hastings Street, retired. E J Leahy is listed at 6920 Inverness Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Edward J Leahy there as the householder, a motorman at the BC Electric Railway, with Edward J Leahy Jr, a druggist at Cunningham Drug, James A Leahy, an apprentice at Cunningham Drug, M Cath Leahy, a clerk at the BC Electric Railway, and Patrick J Leahy, an electrician. The 1940 name section lists Peter Leahy at 1001 West Broadway, a laborer at Hume & Rumble.
Today
160 East Hastings still has its building from before 1946, dated 1913 by the City's record; 6920 Inverness (1994) and 1001 West Broadway (1989) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 135 East 16th and 1346 East Georgia, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under L. Want a name removed? Tell us.
