What they did
The name section prints a trade for ten of the 19: a barber, a clerk, a conductor, a machinist, a maid and a school janitor, among others. Two of them worked for Vancouver City. Three are widows, listed under their own names.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Downtown (3), Arbutus Ridge (2), Dunbar-Southlands (2), Fairview, Riley Park, Sunset, West End and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists H Lacey at 250 East 32nd Avenue. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Harry Lacey there as the householder, a barber. In 1940 the directory lists J H Lacey at 437 East 44th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists J Henry Lacey there as the householder, a conductor at the BC Electric Railway, with Fanny Lacey, widow of G.
In 1940 the directory lists A C Lacey, in signs, at 437 Homer Street. A C Lacey is listed at 1064 Hornby Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Alfred C Lacey there as the householder, in signs, with Robert I Lacey, a student. The 1940 name section lists Beatrice Lacey at 621 Jervis Street, a maid at the Devonshire Hotel.
The 1940 name section lists Kathleen Lacey at 1643 Nelson Street, widow of W. Miss E A Lacey is listed at 1442 West 10th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Edith A Lacey there as the householder.
P J Lacey is listed at 4620 West 14th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Philip J Lacey there as the householder, a school janitor at the City of Vancouver. Today
4620 West 14th and 2806 West 29th still have their buildings from before 1946; 250 East 32nd (2011), 1064 Hornby (2000), 621 Jervis (2003) and 3554 West 16th (2000) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 437 East 44th, 437 Homer, 1643 Nelson, 1442 West 10th, 3254 West 21st and 2291 West 35th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

The book of the Laceys
Every directory, as one book
The family book reads the Lacey name in each Vancouver directory we hold from 1901 to 1945: everyone printed under it at every address, their work from the name sections, who lived next door, and the page behind every line, to read here or save as a PDF to print or give.

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under L. Want a name removed? Tell us.
