What they did
The name section prints a trade for seven of the eight: a barber, a chief steward, a conductor, a farmer, a pressman and a saleswoman, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in West End (3), Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), Downtown and Grandview-Woodland. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Jessie F Knott at 990 Bute Street, a stenographer. A E Knott is listed at 821 Denman Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Archibald E Knott there as the householder, a chief steward at the BC Coast Steamship Service.
Mrs K Knott is listed at 732 Drake Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Katie Knott there as the householder, widow of W P, with Jacob D Knott, a barber at Vancouver Hotel Barber Shop. The 1940 name section lists Isaac Knott at 2167 Dundas Street, a farmer.
In 1940 the directory lists A W Knott at 810 East 22nd Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Alfred W Knott there as the householder, a pressman for A H Timms. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Edith Knott at 2080 Haro Street, a saleswoman.
A H Knott is listed at 3848 Inverness Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Albert H Knott there as the householder, a conductor at the BC Electric Railway.
Today
990 Bute, 2167 Dundas and 3848 Inverness still have their buildings from before 1946; 821 Denman (1956) and 810 East 22nd (1977) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 732 Drake and 2080 Haro, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under K. Want a name removed? Tell us.
