What they did
The name section prints a trade for four of the eleven: a farmer, a janitor, a painter and a superintendent. One is a widow, listed under her own name.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in West End (3), Fairview (2), Shaughnessy (2), Downtown, Kensington-Cedar Cottage and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Isabel Kirkland at 846 Denman Street, a widow. J Kirkland is listed at 4578 Dumfries Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists John Kirkland there as the householder, a janitor at Boeings.
C M Kirkland is listed at 1033 Howe Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Carl M Kirkland there as the householder, a painter. H S Kirkland is listed at 1537 Marpole Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Harry S Kirkland there as the householder, of Kirkland & Rose.
The 1940 name section lists Lily Kirkland at 1245 Nicola Street. In 1940 the directory lists F W Kirkland at 2090 Pendrell Street. The 1940 name section lists Frederick W Kirkland there as the householder, a superintendent at B & K Logging. In 1940 the directory lists H N Kirkland at 4262 Pine Crescent; the 1940 line is marked * too.
Mrs W Kirkland is listed at 1507 West 12th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Wilhelmine Kirkland there as the householder. J Kirkland is listed at 3731 West 7th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists James Kirkland there as the householder, of Kirkland & Thompson.
J Kirkland is listed at 1064 West 8th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John Kirkland there as the householder, a farmer, with Ruby H Kirkland.
Today
1537 Marpole and 1507 West 12th still have their buildings from before 1946; 4578 Dumfries (2019) and 1245 Nicola (1955) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 846 Denman, 1033 Howe, 2090 Pendrell, 4262 Pine Crescent, 3731 West 7th and 1064 West 8th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under K. Want a name removed? Tell us.
