A family name in Vancouver's city directories
The Killeens
In the city directories 1940 · nine people at six addresses
The directories print nine people named Killeen at six addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods, with the close spelling Killen. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Killeens at 6263 Prince Albert in 1940.

What they did
The name section prints a trade for five of the nine: an employee, a helper, a longshoreman, a stenographer and a timberman. One is a widow, listed under her own name.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Fairview, Hastings-Sunrise, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Strathcona, Sunset and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Killen (no first name printed) at 1036 Barclay Street. P T Killeen is listed at 1381 East 11th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists T Patrick Killeen there as the householder, who worked for the BC Telephone. E A Killeen is listed at 2729 Heather Street in 1940.
The 1940 name section lists Earl C Killeen at 1022 Main Street, a longshoreman. Mrs J Killen is listed at 6263 Prince Albert Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Janet Killen there as the householder, widow of T, with Janet B Killen, a stenographer at R S Day & Son, and William Killen, a helper at National Biscuit. The 1940 name section lists Thomas H Killeen at 3359 Turner Street, a timberman at the City of Vancouver.
Today
6263 Prince Albert still has its building from before 1946, dated 1919 by the City's record; 1022 Main (1960) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1036 Barclay, 1381 East 11th and 2729 Heather, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred); for 3359 Turner, its page says what we could and couldn't match to today's buildings.

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under K. Want a name removed? Tell us.
