What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the twelve: a salesman (2), a longshoreman, a painter, a scaler, a secretary manager and a stenographer. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (2), Hastings-Sunrise (2), Shaughnessy (2), Renfrew-Collingwood, West End and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Mary Kearns at 1663 Avondale Avenue, a widow. R H Kearns is listed at 787 Bute Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Robert H Kearns there as the householder, a scaler at the BC Government, with John K Kearns.

C Kearns is listed at 3153 East 2nd Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Charles Kearns there as the householder, a longshoreman. The 1940 name section lists Thomas Kearns at 625 Hamilton Street, retired.

In 1940 the directory lists D W Kearns at 5274 Taunton Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists David W Kearns there as the householder, retired. The 1940 name section lists John J Kearns at 810 Thurlow Street, a painter.

W P Kearns is listed at 2514 Turner Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William P Kearns there as the householder, a salesman at Fleck Bros, with William J C Kearns, a student. S J Kearns is listed at 4738 West 2nd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Stan J Kearns there as the householder, a salesman at Mackenzie White & Dunsmuir, with Kathleen S Kearns, a stenographer for Hale Optical.

The 1940 name section lists John D Kearns at 1308 West 33rd Avenue, a secretary manager at the Shaughnessy Heights Golf Club.

Today

1663 Avondale, 3153 East 2nd, 2514 Turner and 4738 West 2nd still have their buildings from before 1946; 5274 Taunton (1979) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 787 Bute, 625 Hamilton, 810 Thurlow and 1308 West 33rd, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under K. Want a name removed? Tell us.
