What they did

The name section prints a trade for six of the ten: a boat builder, a clerk, a fireman, a plumber, a salesman and a school teacher. Two of them worked for Vancouver City. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Fairview, Grandview-Woodland and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Mrs Ethel Jolliffe at 1165 Davie Street. E T Jolliffe, a plumber, is listed at 1217 East 20th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Edgar T Jolliffe there, a plumber, with Alfred T Jolliffe.

A G Jolliffe is listed at 1271 East 23rd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Archibald G Jolliffe there as the householder, a boat builder at A Linton & Co. The 1940 name section lists Walter Jolliffe at 159 East Hastings Street, retired.

In 1940 the directory lists P Jolliffe at 2016 Ferndale Street. The 1940 name section lists Percy Jolliffe there as the householder, a fireman at the City of Vancouver. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs E L Jolliff at 1455 West 15th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Eleanor L Jolliff there as the householder, widow of S D, with E Loraine Jolliff, a school teacher.

In 1940 the directory lists F B B Jolliffe at 2945 West 36th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frank B B Jolliffe there as the householder, a salesman at the Hudson's Bay Company, with Bernard C Jolliffe, a clerk at Island Mountain Mines.

Today

1217 East 20th, 1271 East 23rd, 2016 Ferndale, 1455 West 15th and 2945 West 36th still have their buildings from before 1946, 2016 Ferndale on the Vancouver Heritage Register; the City no longer lists 1165 Davie, so that building is probably gone (inferred); for 159 East Hastings, its page says what we could and couldn't match to today's buildings.

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under J. Want a name removed? Tell us.
