What they did
The name section prints a trade for nine of the 14: an apprentice, a cook, a dispenser, an employee, a freight claims agent and a proprietor, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Downtown, Grandview-Woodland, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Riley Park, Shaughnessy, Strathcona, West End and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists E Jeffries at 446 East 36th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Edward Jeffries there as the householder, a stableman at Canadian Bakeries, with Anna Jeffries, a dispenser for Scotts Cafe, and Gordon Jeffries, who worked for Restmore. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs M D Jeffries at 3223 Findlay Street. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Mary D Jeffries there as the householder.
In 1940 the directory lists H B Jeffries at 1880 Frances Street. The 1940 name section lists Harry B Jeffries there as the householder, a shoe maker. The 1940 name section lists Ray Jefferies at 1105 Haro Street, a cook at The Turf. The 1940 name section lists William Jeffries at 828 Keefer Street.
In 1940 the directory lists G Jefferies at 4549 Osler Street. The 1940 name section lists George Jefferies there as the householder, a freight claims agent at the CPR. The 1940 name section lists Jefferies at 1160 Seymour Street.
Mrs M J Jefferies is listed at 4680 West 11th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Mary J Jefferies there as the householder, widow of P W, with Edna M Jefferies, a telephone operator at Crane, Ellen C Jefferies, proprietor of Miss Knox, Frederick A Jefferies, and P Robert Jefferies, an apprentice at the Province.
Today
3223 Findlay, 828 Keefer and 4680 West 11th still have their buildings from before 1946, 828 Keefer on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 446 East 36th (1974), 1880 Frances (2017) and 4549 Osler (1994) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1105 Haro and 1160 Seymour, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under J. Want a name removed? Tell us.
