What they did
The name section prints a trade for seven of the twelve: a carpenter (2), a farmer, a grocer, a physiotherapist, a salesman and a steel worker.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Fairview (4), Downtown (3), West End (2), Grandview-Woodland, Marpole and Riley Park. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists W Inkster at 8069 Cartier Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists William Inkster there as the householder, a carpenter. In 1940 the directory lists C H Inkster, a dentist, at 825 Granville Street.
G C Inkster is listed at 1772 Haro Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Gilbert C Inkster there as the householder, a physiotherapist at the Pacific Athletic Club. J H Inkster, a grocer, is listed at 2749 Oak Street in 1940.
In 1940 the directory lists W Inkster at 998 Thurlow Street. The 1940 name section lists William Inkster there as the householder, a steel worker. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs M Inkster at 1488 Venables Street. The 1940 name section lists Mrs May K Inkster there as the householder.
In 1940 the directory lists J D Inkster at 875 West 10th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. J H Inkster is listed at 1126 West 11th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists J Herbert Inkster there as the householder, a grocer. The 1940 name section lists Geoffrey F Inkster at 1735 West 12th Avenue, a salesman at the Province.
In 1940 the directory lists J D Inkster at 447 West 23rd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Joseph D Inkster there as the householder, in real estate, with Joseph D Inkster Jr, a carpenter. The 1940 name section lists William Inkster at 1155 West Georgia Street, a farmer. J D Inkster, in real estate, is listed at 417 West Pender Street in 1940.
Today
825 Granville and 998 Thurlow still have their buildings from before 1946; 1126 West 11th (1992) and 447 West 23rd (2013) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 8069 Cartier, 1772 Haro, 2749 Oak, 1488 Venables, 875 West 10th, 1735 West 12th, 1155 West Georgia and 417 West Pender, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under I. Want a name removed? Tell us.
