The addresses are in Grandview-Woodland (2), Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Kerrisdale and Sunset. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists U E Houghland at 5525 Blenheim Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Urban E Houghland there as the householder, an accountant at Price Waterhouse & Co. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Agnes Highland at 743 Cambie Street, with Joseph Highland. Echo Highland, a newspaper, is listed at 1616 Commercial Drive in 1940.
In 1940 the directory lists Mrs S M Highland at 1221 Cotton Drive. The 1940 name section lists Sena M Highland there as the householder, widow of J E. In 1940 the directory lists J H Houghland at 7162 Cypress Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists J Harold Houghland there as the householder, an accountant at Wood & English.
In 1940 the directory lists Mrs E Houghland at 740 East 24th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Eliza Houghland there as the householder, widow of U E. In 1940 the directory lists C D Houghland at 1011 East 41st Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Charles D Houghland there as the householder, in drugs.
In 1940 the directory lists C D Houghland, in drugs, at 6107 Fraser Street.
Today
5525 Blenheim, 1616 Commercial Drive, 1221 Cotton Drive and 740 East 24th still have their buildings from before 1946; 1011 East 41st (1993) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 743 Cambie, 7162 Cypress and 6107 Fraser, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under H. Want a name removed? Tell us.
