What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the twelve: a clerk (2), an auditor, a district sales manager, an engineer, a freight operator and an on active service, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Dunbar-Southlands (2), Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), Downtown, Fairview, Hastings-Sunrise, Strathcona and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists C L Hennessy at 1128 East Hastings Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Charles L Hennessy there as the householder, an engineer. In 1940 the directory lists D S Hennessy at 4495 Gladstone Street. The 1940 name section lists David S Hennessy there as the householder, a freight operator at BC Motor Transportation, with Gerald Hennessy.

In 1940 the directory lists G J Hennessey at 5870 Highbury Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Gordon J Hennessey there as the householder, a sawyer at H M Shingle. In 1940 the directory lists A E Hennessey at 2047 Mannering Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Alex E Hennessey there as the householder, a clerk at the Post Office.

The 1940 name section lists J Hennesy at 1165 Richards Street, with T Hennesy. J R Hennessey is listed at 1944 Rupert Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John R Hennessey there as the householder, an auditor at Little Bros.

W E Hennessy is listed at 1455 West 14th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists William E Hennessy there as the householder, a district sales manager at United Cigar Stores, with Bernard S Hennessy, a clerk at the Imperial Bank. R P Hennessy is listed at 4615 West 15th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Reginald P Hennessy there as the householder, on active service, with Reginald Hennessy.

J L Hennessy is listed at 4055 West 41st Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists James L Hennessy there as the householder, a sheet metal worker at Boeings.

Today

4495 Gladstone, 2047 Mannering and 1455 West 14th still have their buildings from before 1946; 5870 Highbury (2002), 4615 West 15th (1987) and 4055 West 41st (1950) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1128 East Hastings, 1165 Richards and 1944 Rupert, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under H. Want a name removed? Tell us.
