What they did

The name section prints a trade for six of the 13: a bookbinder, a coal, a laborer, a maid, a secretary and a swamper. Three of them worked for Empire Chimney Service. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Fairview (2), West End (2), Hastings-Sunrise, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kerrisdale, Riley Park and Victoria-Fraserview. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists J H Hiebert at 6784 Dumfries Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Jacob H Hiebert there as the householder, a swamper at Garvin Ice & Fuel. The 1940 name section lists Yvonne H Hebert at 362 East 40th Avenue, a secretary at Manufacturers Sales. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Selma Hebert at 901 Jervis Street.

In 1940 the directory lists Miss B A Hebert at 3563 Lakewood Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Beatrice A Hebert there as the householder, a bookbinder. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs M U Hebert at 2548 McGill Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Mary U Hebert there as the householder, widow of N H.

In 1940 the directory lists W L Hebert, rooms to let, at 1180 Robson Street. The 1940 name section lists Wilbrod L Hebert there as the householder, of Empire Chimney Service, with Joseph Hebert, of Empire Chimney Service, and Robert Hebert, of Empire Chimney Service. The 1940 name section lists Mary Hiebert at 1761 West 49th Avenue, a maid for L H Thorlaksson. The 1940 name section lists Omar Heibert at 1402 West 5th Avenue, in coal & wood.

In 1940 the directory lists J Hiebert at 967 West 8th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists John Hiebert there as the householder, a laborer, with Elmer Hiebert.

Today

362 East 40th and 967 West 8th still have their buildings from before 1946, 967 West 8th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 6784 Dumfries (1970), 901 Jervis (1958), 3563 Lakewood (1974) and 2548 McGill (1962) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1180 Robson, 1761 West 49th and 1402 West 5th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under H. Want a name removed? Tell us.
