A family name in Vancouver's city directories
The Hannahs
In the city directories 1940 · eleven people at nine addresses
The directories print eleven people named Hannah at nine addresses in 1940 in eight of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Hannahs at 4601 Ravine in 1940.

Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Fairview (2), Downtown, Hastings-Sunrise, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Killarney, Renfrew-Collingwood, Strathcona and Victoria-Fraserview. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists Mrs J Hannah at 974 East 28th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Janet Hannah there as the householder, widow of J. In 1940 the directory lists D C Hannah at 2107 East 54th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists David C Hannah there as the householder, retired.
The 1940 name section lists Frank Hannah at 873 East Hastings Street, on active service. T B Hannah is listed at 3376 McGill Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Thomas B Hannah there as the householder, a first aid attendant.
J A Hannah is listed at 5936 Ormidale Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John A Hannah there as the householder. J Hannah is listed at 4601 Ravine Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists John Hannah there as the householder, a laborer at the Anthes-Tait Foundry, with David Hannah and Robert Hannah.
The 1940 name section lists J Richard Hannah at 900 Seymour Street, proprietor of Oyster House Cafe. In 1940 the directory lists A J Hannah at 1717 West 2nd Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Alex J Hannah there as the householder.
In 1940 the directory lists R J Hannah at 876 West Broadway. The 1940 name section lists Robert J Hannah there as the householder, a janitor at the Great Northern Railway.
Today
974 East 28th and 900 Seymour still have their buildings from before 1946; 2107 East 54th (2005) and 5936 Ormidale (1979) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 873 East Hastings, 3376 McGill, 4601 Ravine, 1717 West 2nd and 876 West Broadway, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under H. Want a name removed? Tell us.
