The directories print eleven people named Greenaway at nine addresses in 1940 in seven of the city's neighbourhoods, with the close spelling Greenway. What they did

The name section prints a trade for six of the eleven: a carpenter, a cosmetician, a groundsman, a hairdresser, a proprietor and a sausage maker. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Fairview (3), Downtown, Grandview-Woodland, Hastings-Sunrise, Renfrew-Collingwood, West End and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Greenaway at 903 Davie Street. S Greenaway is listed at 2497 East 27th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Sam Greenaway there as the householder, a groundsman.

Miss E A Greenaway is listed at 2591 East Pender Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Elizabeth A Greenaway there as the householder, a sausage maker at Burns & Co, with Sarah Greenaway, widow of R. Mrs L Greenway is listed at 2570 Hemlock Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Lorna Greenway there as the householder, a cosmetician at Cunningham Drug.

W Greenaway is listed at 1069 Thurlow Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William Greenaway there as the householder, proprietor of The Lumley. H J Greenaway is listed at 4233 West 11th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists H John Greenaway there as the householder, of Greenaway & Tasker.

The 1940 name section lists Louise E Greenway at 1409 West 7th Avenue, a hairdresser at Daisy's Wave Shoppe. In 1940 the directory lists Kate Greenaway, a women's clothing, at 981 West Broadway. The 1940 name section lists Wilfred Greenaway at 620 Woodland Drive, a carpenter.

Today

2497 East 27th and 2570 Hemlock still have their buildings from before 1946; 903 Davie (1981) and 4233 West 11th (2014) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2591 East Pender, 1069 Thurlow, 1409 West 7th, 981 West Broadway and 620 Woodland Drive, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under G. Want a name removed? Tell us.
