The Gertzes

In the city directories 1940 · eleven people at six addresses

The directories print eleven people named Gertz at six addresses in 1940 in three of the city's neighbourhoods, with the close spelling Goertz. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: four Gertzes at 865 East 57th in 1940.

Where the Gertzes lived

Each pin is on its own block, numbered as the households below. Two addresses aren't on today's map, so they have no pin. Today's land, parks, main roads and local areas: City of Vancouver Open Data (Open Government Licence – Vancouver).

What they did

The name section prints a trade for six of the eleven: a maid (2), an apprentice, a housekeeper, a laborer and a physiotherapist.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kerrisdale (3), Sunset (2) and Downtown. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Susie Goertz at 5775 Angus Drive, a maid for E H Adams. The 1940 name section lists Dorothy Goertz at 6412 Churchill Street, a maid for Mrs M J Crowe. In 1940 the directory lists Miss F Gertz, a physiotherapist, at 709 Dunsmuir Street. The 1940 name section lists Frieda Gertz there, a physiotherapist.

In 1940 the directory lists S Gertz at 357 East 56th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Sam Gertz there as the householder, a laborer at Canadian White Pine, with Walter Gertz, an apprentice at the Reliance Foundry. In 1940 the directory lists Miss A Goertz at 865 East 57th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Anna Goertz there as the householder, a housekeeper, with John P Goertz, retired, and Mary Goertz.

In 1940 the directory lists F Goertz at 1887 West 45th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frederick Goertz there as the householder, retired.

Today

5775 Angus Drive and 1887 West 45th still have their buildings from before 1946; 6412 Churchill (2012), 357 East 56th (1984) and 865 East 57th (1992) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 709 Dunsmuir, so that building is probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under G. Want a name removed? Tell us.
