The Funks

In the city directories 1940 · ten people at eight addresses

The directories print ten people named Funk at eight addresses in 1940 in eight of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Funks at 1655 West 66th in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the ten: a maid (4), a helper, a manager, a proprietor and a salesman.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown, Dunbar-Southlands, Fairview, Kerrisdale, Marpole, Shaughnessy, Sunset and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Helen Funk at 5925 Angus Drive, a maid for H A Gould. The 1940 name section lists Elizabeth Funk at 1611 Drummond Drive, a maid for K G Nairn. In 1940 the directory lists D W Funk at 6445 Fraser Street. The 1940 name section lists Dietrich W Funk there as the householder, proprietor of Avenue Jewellers.

In 1940 the directory lists E H Funk, a physician, at 718 Granville Street. The 1940 name section lists Agnes Funk at 4861 Marguerite Street, a maid for G A Lees. In 1940 the directory lists Dr E H Funk at 904 West 16th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark).

D H Funk is listed at 2979 West 38th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists David H Funk there as the householder, a manager at the Mackenzie Heights Service Station. H D Funk is listed at 1655 West 66th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Henry D Funk there as the householder, a salesman, with Edna H Funk, a helper at Pacific Meat, and Gertrude M Funk, a maid for J E Black.

Today

1611 Drummond Drive still has its building from before 1946, dated 1925 by the City's record; 6445 Fraser (1973) and 1655 West 66th (1989) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 5925 Angus Drive, 718 Granville, 4861 Marguerite, 904 West 16th and 2979 West 38th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under F. Want a name removed? Tell us.
