The Friends

In the city directories 1940 · twelve people at nine addresses

The directories print twelve people named Friend at nine addresses in 1940 in seven of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Friends at 3647 Vanness in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for nine of the twelve: a branch manager, a building contractor, a cashier, a clerk, an employee and a foreman, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Grandview-Woodland (2), Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), Downtown, Renfrew-Collingwood, Riley Park, West End and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists H J Friend, a building contractor, at 1634 East 22nd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Henry J Friend there as the householder, a building contractor. In 1940 the directory lists G B Friend at 1666 East 22nd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists George B Friend there as the householder, a branch manager at Safeway Stores.

In 1940 the directory lists G H Friend at 2126 East 5th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists George H Friend there as the householder, a foreman at the BC Electric Railway, with Ray G Friend, a student. The 1940 name section lists Anna Friend at 1220 Nicola Street, a stenographer at the City of Vancouver. The 1940 name section lists Cecil Friend at 712 Richards Street.

In 1940 the directory lists C W Friend at 3647 Vanness Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Charles W Friend there as the householder, a clerk at the BC Government, with Grace E Friend, a cashier at Woodward's, and Thomas Friend, a salesman at Spencer's. In 1940 the directory lists H E Friend at 1160 Victoria Drive.

G Friend is listed at 4617 West 12th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists George Friend there as the householder, who worked for the BC Telephone. J Friend is listed at 440 West 19th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists James Friend there as the householder, a machinist.

Today

1634 East 22nd, 1666 East 22nd, 3647 Vanness, 1160 Victoria Drive and 440 West 19th still have their buildings from before 1946; 2126 East 5th (2005) and 4617 West 12th (1990) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1220 Nicola, so that building is probably gone (inferred); for 712 Richards, its page says what we could and couldn't match to today's buildings.

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under F. Want a name removed? Tell us.
