What they did
The name section prints a trade for nine of the 19: a clerk, an engineer, a laborer, a nurse, a pilot and a plant foreman, among others. Two are widows, listed under their own names.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Downtown (3), Sunset (2), West End (2), Arbutus Ridge, Riley Park, Strathcona and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Myrtle A Flood at 1110 Comox Street, widow of W E. C H Flood is listed at 896 East 45th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Charles H Flood there as the householder, an engineer, with Cath F Flood, a clerk at the Bank of Montreal.
Mrs A Flood is listed at 1915 Haro Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Alice Flood there as the householder, with Flood (no first name printed), and Patricia H Flood, a waitress at McDonald's Fine Chocolates. L W Flood is listed at 1241 Homer Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Louis W Flood there as the householder, a laborer.
The 1940 name section lists Hubert S Flood at 1153 Hornby Street, a postman. The 1940 name section lists B Flood at 306 Jackson Avenue. The 1940 name section lists J Flood at 712 Richards Street.
In 1940 the directory lists G R Flood at 6598 Ross Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists George R Flood there as the householder, a plant foreman at Vibra-Lite, with Marguerite R Flood, a stenographer for A H Rathie. In 1940 the directory lists Mrs E Flood at 285 West 19th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Elizabeth Flood there as the householder, widow of J, with Francis Flood, who worked for Morrison Steel, Michael Flood, and Nora M Flood, a nurse at the St Marys Hospital.
In 1940 the directory lists J Flood at 2722 West 34th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists James Flood there as the householder, retired. In 1940 the directory lists J J Flood at 4610 West 6th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John J Flood there as the householder, a pilot at the Canadian Government, with Roy O Flood, a student.
Today
1915 Haro and 285 West 19th still have their buildings from before 1946; 1110 Comox (2002), 1241 Homer (2008), 306 Jackson (1976), 6598 Ross (2010), 2722 West 34th (1990) and 4610 West 6th (2014) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 896 East 45th and 1153 Hornby, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred); for 712 Richards, its page says what we could and couldn't match to today's buildings.

The book of the Floods
Every directory, as one book
The family book reads the Flood name in each Vancouver directory we hold from 1901 to 1945: everyone printed under it at every address, their work from the name sections, who lived next door, and the page behind every line, to read here or save as a PDF to print or give.

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under F. Want a name removed? Tell us.
