What they did
The name section prints a trade for seven of the ten: a clerk, an elevator operator, an engineer, a nurse, a superintendent and a technician, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in West End (3), Downtown (2), Kerrisdale (2), Dunbar-Southlands and Marpole. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists J Erskine at 5951 Blenheim Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists John Erskine there as the householder, retired, with John F Erskine, a clerk at Royal Trust. In 1940 the directory lists R Erskine at 1091 Broughton Street. The 1940 name section lists Robert Erskine there as the householder.
The 1940 name section lists Hannah Erskine at 1056 Comox Street, a nurse at the St Paul's Hospital. S E Erskine is listed at 6370 McCleery Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Steuart E Erskine there as the householder, an engineer at the Canadian General Electric.
Mrs M G Erskine is listed at 1435 Pendrell Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Muriel G Erskine there as the householder, widow of A B, with Margaret R Erskine, a technician at the Vancouver General Hospital. The 1940 name section lists Math Erskine at 123 Powell Street.
In 1940 the directory lists R Erskine at 1111 Seymour Street. The 1940 name section lists Robert Erskine there as the householder, an elevator operator at the Metro Building. In 1940 the directory lists R S Erskine at 3272 West 28th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Ralph S Erskine there as the householder, a traffic manager at Standard Brands.
The 1940 name section lists Erma R Erskine at 250 West 59th Avenue, a superintendent at the Crippled Children's Hospital.
Today
5951 Blenheim, 1091 Broughton and 6370 McCleery still have their buildings from before 1946; 1435 Pendrell (1959), 1111 Seymour (2017) and 3272 West 28th (1990) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1056 Comox, 123 Powell and 250 West 59th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under E. Want a name removed? Tell us.
