What they did

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Grandview-Woodland (3), Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), Kerrisdale (2), Downtown, Fairview, Riley Park and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists William P Eldridge at 1555 Charles Street as the householder, a shoe repairer. W P Eldridge, a shoe repairer, is listed at 1431 Commercial Drive in 1940. In 1940 the directory lists H L Eldridge at 426 East 20th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Herbert L Eldridge there as the householder, a motorman at the BC Electric Railway.

In 1940 the directory lists H Eldridge at 1258 East 26th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Herbert Eldridge there as the householder, in drugs, with Ken A Eldridge, a student at UBC. The 1940 name section lists Kathleen Eldridge at 1175 Haro Street, a stenographer.

H D Eldridge is listed at 965 Homer Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Harvey D Eldridge there as the householder, a longshoreman, with Arthur H Eldridge, an upholsterer at Continental Upholstery. H Eldridge, in drugs, is listed at 1398 Kingsway in 1940.

In 1940 the directory lists J Eldridge at 1517 Parker Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John Eldridge there as the householder, a deputy warden at the Oakalla Prison Farm. The 1940 name section lists Thelma Eldridge at 1625 West 11th Avenue, a stenographer.

H P Eldridge is listed at 1938 West 43rd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Harold P Eldridge there as the householder, a manager at Hardwood Chair. G S Eldridge is listed at 2892 West 44th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Gardner S Eldridge there as the householder, a manager at G S Eldridge & Co.

Today

426 East 20th, 1258 East 26th and 1938 West 43rd still have their buildings from before 1946; 1555 Charles (1987), 1175 Haro (1967) and 2892 West 44th (1975) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1431 Commercial Drive, 965 Homer, 1398 Kingsway, 1517 Parker and 1625 West 11th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under E. Want a name removed? Tell us.
