The Edmondsons

In the city directories 1940 · twelve people at nine addresses

The directories print twelve people named Edmondson at nine addresses in 1940 in six of the city's neighbourhoods, with the close spelling Edmundson. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Edmondsons at 1250 Salsbury Drive in 1940.

Where the Edmondsons lived

Each pin is on its own block, numbered as the households below. One address isn't on today's map, so it has no pin. Today's land, parks, main roads and local areas: City of Vancouver Open Data (Open Government Licence – Vancouver).

What they did

The name section prints a trade for five of the twelve: a salesman (2), a lineman, a manufacturers agent and a stenographer. Two of them worked for Grandview Shade Works. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (3), Grandview-Woodland (2), Hastings-Sunrise, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Kerrisdale and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists W B Edmondson at 1827 Charles Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists William B Edmondson there as the householder, of Grandview Shade Works. The 1940 name section lists Hugh Edmondson at 958 Denman Street, a salesman at Spencer's.

C Edmundson is listed at 1555 East 12th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Clarence Edmundson there as the householder, a salesman at Cowan-Dodson. The 1940 name section lists Harry E Edmundson at 1176 Granville Street, a lineman at the BC Electric Railway. In 1940 the directory lists G L Edmondson, a manufacturers agent, at 1062 Hamilton Street.

The 1940 name section lists Mrs Mary Edmundson at 1235 Hornby Street. In 1940 the directory lists G L Edmondson at 6670 Lime Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists George L Edmondson there as the householder, a manufacturers agent, with Jack D Edmondson.

In 1940 the directory lists C B Edmondson at 1250 Salsbury Drive. The 1940 name section lists Charles B Edmondson there as the householder, of Grandview Shade Works, with E Leah Edmondson, and June M Edmondson, a stenographer at Bates Valve Bag. The 1940 name section lists Annie Edmundson at 2555 Turner Street, widow of J W.

Today

1176 Granville, 6670 Lime and 2555 Turner still have their buildings from before 1946; 958 Denman (1955) and 1555 East 12th (1985) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 1827 Charles, 1062 Hamilton, 1235 Hornby and 1250 Salsbury Drive, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under E. Want a name removed? Tell us.
