The Dykes

In the city directories 1940 · ten people at seven addresses

The directories print ten people named Dyke at seven addresses in 1940 in five of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Dykes at 1460 West 38th in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for five of the ten: an artist, a confectioner, a director, a maid and a stenographer. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Shaughnessy (2), West End (2), Arbutus Ridge, Dunbar-Southlands and Victoria-Fraserview. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Susan Dyke at 5630 Angus Drive, a maid for F J Dawson. S L Dyke is listed at 1234 Robson Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Sid L Dyke there as the householder, an artist. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Gertrude Dyke at 1602 Robson Street.

In 1940 the directory lists T J Dyke, a confectioner, at 6480 Victoria Drive. The 1940 name section lists Thomas J Dyke there, a confectioner. In 1940 the directory lists M K Dyke at 3567 West 26th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Martin K Dyke there as the householder, with Madeline Dyke, a clerk for Metro Life, and Florence T Dyke, a stenographer at the Lyric Theatre.

In 1940 the directory lists P H Dyke at 1460 West 38th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Percy H Dyke there as the householder, a director at Leith & Dyke, with Dorothy L Dyke and Phyllis C Dyke. The 1940 name section lists Cecilia Dyke at 2276 West 40th Avenue, widow of W.

Today

5630 Angus Drive, 3567 West 26th and 1460 West 38th still have their buildings from before 1946; the City no longer lists 1234 Robson, 1602 Robson, 6480 Victoria Drive and 2276 West 40th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under D. Want a name removed? Tell us.
