The Dunnes

In the city directories 1940 · ten people at eight addresses

The directories print ten people named Dunne at eight addresses in 1940 in five of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Dunnes at 4150 Osler in 1940.

What they did

The name section prints a trade for five of the ten: a laborer, a managing director, a physician, a superintendent and a warehouseman. Two of them worked for CP Express.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (2), Fairview (2), Shaughnessy (2), Dunbar-Southlands and Marpole. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists P A Dunne at 4150 Osler Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Percy A Dunne there as the householder, a superintendent at CP Express, with Audrey Dunne, and Murray F Dunne, a warehouseman at CP Express. In 1940 the directory lists H G Dunne at 1298 West 10th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Herbert G Dunne there as the householder.

The 1940 name section lists Ralph P Dunne at 1074 West 12th Avenue, a managing director at Dunne & Rundle. M S Dunne is listed at 3864 West 30th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Michael S Dunne there as the householder, retired.

Dr G P Dunne is listed at 1415 West 40th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Gerald P Dunne there as the householder, a physician. J R Dunne is listed at 782 West 62nd Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists James R Dunne there as the householder, a laborer at Canadian White Pine.

G P Dunne, a physician, is listed at 925 West Georgia Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Percy H Dunne at 1356 West Georgia Street.

Today

1298 West 10th, 3864 West 30th and 1415 West 40th still have their buildings from before 1946; the City no longer lists 4150 Osler, 1074 West 12th, 782 West 62nd, 925 West Georgia and 1356 West Georgia, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under D. Want a name removed? Tell us.
