What they did

The name section prints a trade for four of the 13: a domestic, a helper, an on active service and a stenographer.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (3), Dunbar-Southlands (3), Grandview-Woodland (2), Hastings-Sunrise (2), Arbutus Ridge, Kensington-Cedar Cottage and Sunset. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs M M Duggan at 2290 Adanac Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists F Dugan at 1720 East 6th Avenue, a helper at Empire Box. The 1940 name section lists Eileen Dugan at 3615 East Pender Street, a stenographer. L Duggan, a confectioner, is listed at 6145 Fraser Street in 1940.

In 1940 the directory lists W M Duggan, in tobacco, at 718 Granville Street. E J Duggan is listed at 1281 Howe Street in 1940. In 1940 the directory lists J Duggan at 2262 Mannering Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). J Duggan is listed at 932 Smithe Street in 1940.

In 1940 the directory lists T Dugan at 2737 Turner Street. The 1940 name section lists Thomas Dugan there as the householder, on active service. In 1940 the directory lists W P Duggan at 3990 West 21st Avenue. F W Duggan is listed at 3928 West 22nd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too.

The 1940 name section lists May Dugan at 3996 West 22nd Avenue, a domestic for M Beck. J C Duggan is listed at 2606 West 34th Avenue in 1940.

Today

1720 East 6th, 3615 East Pender, 6145 Fraser, 2262 Mannering, 3990 West 21st, 3928 West 22nd and 3996 West 22nd still have their buildings from before 1946; 2737 Turner (1959) and 2606 West 34th (2012) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 2290 Adanac, 718 Granville, 1281 Howe and 932 Smithe, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under D. Want a name removed? Tell us.
