What they did

The name section prints a trade for ten of the 15: a proprietor (2), an accountant, an accounting, a foreman, a gardener and a helper, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Hastings-Sunrise (3), Marpole (2), West End (2), Downtown, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Oakridge, Renfrew-Collingwood and Sunset. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Bertram S Duck at 8464 Cornish Street. The 1940 name section lists Tom Yen Duck at 1287 Davie Street, proprietor of Capitol Grocery Co. In 1940 the directory lists J W C Duck at 1468 Dogwood Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists John W C Duck there as the householder, a manager at J Duck & Son.

In 1940 the directory lists F Duck at 2834 East 16th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frederick Duck there as the householder, a gardener at Vancouver Preventorium, with J Irene Duck. In 1940 the directory lists R J Duck at 2090 East 22nd Avenue. The 1940 name section lists R John Duck there as the householder, a foreman at Buckerfields, with Beatrice Duck, and Doug D Duck, a student.

The 1940 name section lists Jong Duck at 47 East Pender Street, proprietor of Wing Hing. The 1940 name section lists Harold Duck at 3503 East Pender Street, a steward at the Maple Leaf Club. The 1940 name section lists Margaret Duck at 1171 Nelson Street, in accounting at the Sun.

T A Duck is listed at 1260 Nootka Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Thomas A Duck there as the householder, a salesman at Woodward's. The 1940 name section lists Edward W Duck at 6351 Prince Albert Street, a helper at Canadian Boxes. The 1940 name section lists Garnet W Duck at 2465 Triumph Street, an accountant for T B Lee.

J G Duck is listed at 1544 West 59th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John Duck there, retired.

Today

3503 East Pender and 2465 Triumph still have their buildings from before 1946; 1468 Dogwood (1988), 2834 East 16th (1978), 2090 East 22nd (2020), 1260 Nootka (2018) and 6351 Prince Albert (1983) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 8464 Cornish, 1287 Davie, 47 East Pender, 1171 Nelson and 1544 West 59th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under D. Want a name removed? Tell us.
