What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the nine: a linotype layer (2), a butcher, a clerk, an engineer, a helper and a laborer, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Hastings-Sunrise (2), Grandview-Woodland, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Killarney, West End and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists F Dakin at 1308 Beach Avenue. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Francis Dakin there as the householder, a clerk at the Customs. In 1940 the directory lists H W Dakin at 1368 East 11th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Harold W Dakin there as the householder, a linotype layer, with Charles R Dakin, a linotype layer.

In 1940 the directory lists J Deakin at 3557 East 47th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Joseph Deakin there as the householder, a butcher. In 1940 the directory lists H Deakin at 3186 East 4th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Henry Deakin there as the householder, a laborer.

The 1940 name section lists Laurence A Dakin at 1957 East 7th Avenue, an engineer at the Airport. W Deakin is listed at 564 Nanaimo Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists William Deakin there as the householder, a helper at the Hudson's Bay Company.

Miss M E Deakin is listed at 4082 West 8th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Mabel E Deakin there as the householder, a nurse.

Today

1368 East 11th, 1957 East 7th and 4082 West 8th still have their buildings from before 1946; 1308 Beach (1972), 3557 East 47th (2007) and 3186 East 4th (2000) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 564 Nanaimo, so that building is probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under D. Want a name removed? Tell us.
