The De Wolfes

In the city directories 1940 · twelve people at seven addresses

The directories print twelve people named De Wolfe at seven addresses in 1940 in four of the city's neighbourhoods, with the close spellings de Wolfe, de Wolf and De Wolf. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three De Wolfes at 2570 Spruce in 1940.

Where the De Wolfes lived

Each pin is on its own block, numbered as the households below. One address isn't on today's map, so it has no pin. Today's land, parks, main roads and local areas: City of Vancouver Open Data (Open Government Licence – Vancouver).

What they did

The name section prints a trade for seven of the twelve: a manager, a missionary, a president, a salesman, a secretary and a stenographer, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Dunbar-Southlands (2), Fairview (2), West Point Grey (2) and Downtown. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists H E De Wolf at 5432 Blenheim Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Harold E de Wolf there as the householder, a salesman for W H Malkin, with Gloria L de Wolf, a stenographer at Southard Motor. In 1940 the directory lists T St E de Wolf, an accountant, at 470 Granville Street.

Miss C I de Wolfe is listed at 2570 Spruce Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Carolyn I de Wolfe there as the householder, a visitor at the BC Government, with Etta E de Wolfe, a missionary. R B De Wolfe is listed at 4317 West 12th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists R L Borden de Wolfe there as the householder, a manager at De Wolfe Reo Sales.

T E de Wolfe is listed at 1595 West 15th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Thomas E de Wolfe there as the householder, a secretary at the Jantzen Knit Mills, with Marjorie de Wolfe. F T De Wolfe is listed at 4409 West 8th Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frederick T de Wolfe there as the householder, a president at De Wolfe Motors Ltd.

J F De Wolfe is listed at 3450 West King Edward Avenue in 1940.

Today

5432 Blenheim, 470 Granville, 2570 Spruce, 4317 West 12th and 1595 West 15th still have their buildings from before 1946, 1595 West 15th on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 3450 West King Edward (1972) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 4409 West 8th, so that building is probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under D. Want a name removed? Tell us.
