Where the Danns lived

Each pin is on its own block, numbered as the households below. One address isn't on today's map, so it has no pin. Today's land, parks, main roads and local areas: City of Vancouver Open Data (Open Government Licence – Vancouver).

What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the twelve: a confectioner, an ice maker, a lather, a mechanic, a mining and a plastering contractor, among others. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Kensington-Cedar Cottage (2), Renfrew-Collingwood (2), West End (2), Arbutus Ridge, Downtown, Strathcona and West Point Grey. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs A Dann at 894 Bute Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Annie Dann there as the householder, widow of J, with Alan Dann, a student. In 1940 the directory lists A J Dann at 2347 East 38th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Alex J Dann there as the householder, a lather.

The 1940 name section lists Chan C Dan at 227 Keefer Street, proprietor of C C Dan Co. Kay Dan, a confectioner, is listed at 1198 Kingsway in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Kay Dan there, a confectioner.

S J Dann is listed at 2781 Kingsway in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Syd J Dann there as the householder, an ice maker. E Dann, a plastering contractor, is listed at 3285 Nanaimo Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Ernest Dann there, a plastering contractor.

H C Dann is listed at 840 Nelson Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Herbert C Dann there as the householder, a mechanic. G A Dann is listed at 784 Thurlow Street in 1940. The 1940 name section lists George A Dann there as the householder, retired, with Arthur V Dann, a salesman.

E A Dann is listed at 2576 Wallace Crescent in 1940. The 1940 name section lists William Dann at 2856 West 30th Avenue, in mining.

Today

227 Keefer, 784 Thurlow and 2576 Wallace Crescent still have their buildings from before 1946, 784 Thurlow on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 1198 Kingsway (1983), 3285 Nanaimo (1985) and 2856 West 30th (2010) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 894 Bute, 2347 East 38th, 2781 Kingsway and 840 Nelson, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under D. Want a name removed? Tell us.
