What they did

The name section prints a trade for eight of the eleven: a fisherman (2), an employee, a grader, a machinist operator, a manager and a master mariner, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (3), Grandview-Woodland (3), Fairview (2), Strathcona (2) and Victoria-Fraserview. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Carl O Dahl at 337 Dunsmuir Street, a machinist operator at the Province. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Janet Dahl at 1366 East 3rd Avenue, who worked for the BC Telephone. The 1940 name section lists Einar Dahl at 1947 East 41st Avenue, a fisherman. The 1940 name section lists Hans Dahl at 160 East Hastings Street, a fisherman.

The 1940 name section lists A Dahl at 575 East Hastings Street. J E Dahl is listed at 2219 Grant Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists John E Dahl there as the householder, a master mariner at Car Barge Towing. The 1940 name section lists Theo Dahl at 853 Hamilton Street, a millworker.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs M Dahl at 810 Powell Street. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Mabel Dahl there as the householder. The 1940 name section lists A Dahl at 1516 Powell Street.

H Dahl is listed at 1792 West 4th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Harold Dahl there as the householder, a grader at the Eburne Saw Mills. S K Dahl is listed at 1235 West Broadway in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Sanford K Dahl there as the householder, a manager at Iris Steam Baths.

Today

160 East Hastings, 2219 Grant and 1516 Powell still have their buildings from before 1946, 1516 Powell on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 1235 West Broadway (1989) has a newer building, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 337 Dunsmuir, 1366 East 3rd, 1947 East 41st, 575 East Hastings, 853 Hamilton, 810 Powell and 1792 West 4th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under D. Want a name removed? Tell us.
