What they did

The name section prints a trade for ten of the 13: an accountant, an assistant purser, a clerk, a concrete contractor, a floor finisher and a metallurgist, among others.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Hastings-Sunrise (2), Kerrisdale (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Fairview, Grandview-Woodland and Riley Park. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists R W Crompton at 5368 Blenheim Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Robert W Crompton there as the householder, on active service, with Jocelyn M Crompton, and John W S Crompton, a salesman for Royal Crown. In 1940 the directory lists W W Crompton at 5949 Elm Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists William W Crompton there as the householder, a police court clerk at the City of Vancouver, with Harold N Crompton, an assistant purser at the Union Steamship Company, and Ron J Crompton, an accountant.

In 1940 the directory lists S V Crompton, a metallurgist, at 6387 Larch Street. The 1940 name section lists Stan V Crompton there, a metallurgist. In 1940 the directory lists F Crompton at 2065 Triumph Street; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frederick Crompton there as the householder, a clerk at C P Express.

The 1940 name section lists Jack Crompton at 2543 Turner Street, of Atlas Dental Lab. F Crompton, a concrete contractor, is listed at 2428 Venables Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Frank Crompton there, a concrete contractor, with Ray J Crompton, a floor finisher.

M Crompton is listed at 165 West 23rd Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Mark Crompton there as the householder, a pressman at Vancouver Stationers. Mrs M Crompton is listed at 1387 West 7th Avenue in 1940. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Margaret Crompton there as the householder.

Today

5368 Blenheim and 165 West 23rd still have their buildings from before 1946, 5368 Blenheim on the Vancouver Heritage Register; 6387 Larch (2016), 2065 Triumph (1967), 2543 Turner (1991) and 2428 Venables (1975) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 5949 Elm and 1387 West 7th, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under C. Want a name removed? Tell us.
