What they did

The name section prints a trade for six of the 13: a maid (2), a druggist, a foreman, a painter and a president. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Downtown (2), Marpole (2), Shaughnessy (2), Dunbar-Southlands, Hastings-Sunrise, Kerrisdale, Victoria-Fraserview and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists H W Cote at 6963 Beatrice Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Henry W Cote there as the householder, a painter. In 1940 the directory lists R L Coote at 7357 Granville Street. The 1940 name section lists Russell L Coote there as the householder, a president at Ginger Coote Airways.

In 1940 the directory lists Mrs A Cote, rooms to let, at 1788 Haro Street. The 1940 name section lists Amanda Cote there, widow of A. The 1940 name section lists Mrs M L Coote at 1119 Hornby Street, a maid at the Murray Hotel. "Ginger" Airways Coote is listed at 515 Howe Street in 1940.

The 1940 name section lists Yvette Cote at 5162 Marguerite Street, a maid for A C R Yuill. J C Coote is listed at 1290 Matthews Avenue in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists John C Coote there as the householder, retired, with Marion E C Coote. L Cote is listed at 3001 Wall Street in 1940.

In 1940 the directory lists S A Cote at 3331 West 22nd Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Stan A Cote there as the householder. In 1940 the directory lists J Coote at 1179 West 70th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Josias Coote there as the householder, retired, with Josie H Coote, and Ian W Coote, a druggist for Macdonalds Prescriptions.

Today

1119 Hornby, 5162 Marguerite and 1290 Matthews still have their buildings from before 1946; 6963 Beatrice (1965), 3001 Wall (1959), 3331 West 22nd (2017), 2005 West 43rd (2015) and 1179 West 70th (1953) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 7357 Granville, 1788 Haro and 515 Howe, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under C. Want a name removed? Tell us.
