The Cornishes

In the city directories 1940 · 17 people at twelve addresses

The directories print 17 people named Cornish at twelve addresses in 1940 in seven of the city's neighbourhoods. No first name or initials tie one address to another: we can't tell if they're one family. The most under one roof: three Cornishes at 1375 Laurier in 1940.

Where the Cornishes lived

Each pin is on its own block, numbered as the households below. One address isn't on today's map, so it has no pin. Today's land, parks, main roads and local areas: City of Vancouver Open Data (Open Government Licence – Vancouver).

What they did

The name section prints a trade for two of the 17: a managing director and a postman. One is a widow, listed under her own name.

Their neighbourhoods

The addresses are in Marpole (4), Dunbar-Southlands (2), Riley Park (2), Kerrisdale, Shaughnessy, Sunset and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.

The story, address by address

In 1940 the directory lists C E Cornish at 7770 Cartier Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists Stan H Cornish there, a postman. In 1940 the directory lists R L Cornish at 8464 Cornish Street; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark).

Mrs M Cornish is listed at 8484 Cornish Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Minnie Cornish there as the householder, widow of C. The 1940 name section lists James R Cornish at 273 East 21st Avenue, with Walter R Cornish. In 1940 the directory lists F H Cornish at 8455 Granville Street; the 1940 line is marked * too.

The 1940 name section lists Willa F Cornish at 1973 Haro Street. In 1940 the directory lists E O Cornish at 1375 Laurier Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Edgar O Cornish there, a managing director at Simpso, with John Cornish and Oliver Cornish. In 1940 the directory lists C W Cornish at 7505 Prince Edward Street; the 1940 line is marked * too.

C G Cornish is listed at 4477 Walden Street in 1940. In 1940 the directory lists A B Cornish at 3585 West 34th Avenue. C G Cornish is listed at 3266 West 36th Avenue in 1940.

In 1940 the directory lists Y N M Cornish at 2175 West 46th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Vera F Cornish there.

Today

7770 Cartier, 7505 Prince Edward, 4477 Walden, 3266 West 36th and 2175 West 46th still have their buildings from before 1946; 273 East 21st (1972) and 3585 West 34th (2016) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 8464 Cornish, 8484 Cornish, 8455 Granville, 1973 Haro and 1375 Laurier, so those buildings are probably gone (inferred).

Sources

Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under C. Want a name removed? Tell us.
