What they did
The name section prints a trade for eleven of the 18: a painter (2), a caretaker, a cleaner, a clerk, an employee and a helper, among others. Two are widows, listed under their own names.
Their neighbourhoods
The addresses are in Fairview (2), Downtown, Kensington-Cedar Cottage, Riley Park, Shaughnessy, Sunset and West End. Each neighbourhood's page shows its trades, its people and every street in it, the way the directory printed them.
The story, address by address
In 1940 the directory lists J E Collinson at 1424 Comox Street. The 1940 name section, where each person's work is printed, lists John E Collinson there as the householder, a meat cutter at Safeway, with Helen M Collinson, James F Collinson, a painter, John H Collinson, a painter, and Richard Collinson. In 1940 the directory lists F Collinson at 641 East 26th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked *: some member of the family owns the property, to the best of our knowledge (the directory's own mark). The 1940 name section lists Frank Collinson there as the householder, a cleaner at the CPR.
In 1940 the directory lists Mrs M E Collinson at 453 East 45th Avenue; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Mary E Collinson there as the householder, widow of A J, with Adelaide E Collinson, a helper for Mrs D R Ellis, and Mary J Collinson, who worked for the BC Telephone. The 1940 name section lists Christina M Collinson at 1177 Nanton Avenue, widow of G J. The 1940 name section lists Mrs Eleanor Collinson at 1111 Seymour Street, a maid at the Devonshire Hotel.
In 1940 the directory lists Miss J Collinson at 1270 West 11th Avenue. The 1940 name section lists Jean Collinson there as the householder, with Sybil E Collinson, a stenographer at Yorkshire & Pacific Securities. The 1940 name section lists J Bruce Collinson at 945 West 13th Avenue, a mechanic for F Deeley.
C W Collinson is listed at 4824 Windsor Street in 1940; the 1940 line is marked * too. The 1940 name section lists Charles W Collinson there as the householder, a caretaker at the Windsor United Church, with Charles Collinson, a poultryman, Albert Collinson, a clerk, and Mary E Collinson.
Today
1270 West 11th and 4824 Windsor still have their buildings from before 1946; 1424 Comox (1976), 641 East 26th (1958), 453 East 45th (1988), 1177 Nanton (1990) and 1111 Seymour (2017) have newer buildings, by the City's record; the City no longer lists 945 West 13th, so that building is probably gone (inferred).

The book of the Collinsons
Every directory, as one book

Sources
Henderson's and successor city directories for Vancouver, read by us line by line: the street sections for 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935, 1940 and 1945, and the name section for 1930 and 1940 where we've read it (Vancouver Public Library, BC City Directories). Names are shown through 1945, as printed. Close spellings are grouped, as on the house pages, since a family's name was often spelled differently from one year to the next; one name can still be several families, and we join lines only where the first names or initials agree. Many Chinese, Japanese and other residents weren't named by the canvassers, so they can't be listed by name: their houses' pages say where. More family names under C. Want a name removed? Tell us.
